"Ah, the best kind...."
(...If you don't aleady know this stuff...)
uploading Files: WS_FTP is the program we recommend for file transfer. Until we write our own tutorial, Mindspring has a great one for it at http://help.mindspring.com/tutorials/wsftp/w95/
The directory you upload files to may or not use the same url as the one you will use to view your files or refer to them. Unless you have your own domain setup and running on the rComm.net server, you will login to ftp://rcomm.net using your personal ID and password. If yours is a domain name account, you will be able to log in to ftp://mydomain.com when your domain account is established. Your login and password take you to your automatically and dirctly to your own home directory. You may add and use directories created here, but you will not see the rest of the server directory structure. The url you will use to access your files is http://rComm.net/(yourname) Unix servers, unlike PC's are totally specific about filenames. Case does matter. Don't confuse index.html with INDEX.HTML they are quite different. Your home page will be called index.html or index.htm. if you want a different default page, let us know and we will change it for you. Image files
- If you use an ftp client program which offers an option between "ascii" or "binary", use "binary" for image files.
- Each 1,000 bytes of image size can be compared to one complete second of download time.
- We assume that users will not wait more than 25 seconds for images to appear. Keep your image files below 30k if at all possible.
- Graphics Programs
- Keep image files small using jpeg compression. Many inital scan or digital camera files can maintain their online image quality with as much as 60% or more data compression. Lview Pro has an excellent compression algorithm for jpegs. It is available on trial download at: http://Lview.com
- Paint Shop Pro is another excellent and popular graphics program, with much the same cababilities, but support more file source types. It is available at http://jasc.com/
